Mount Elgon (4321m) is a massive solitary volcanic mountain on the border with Kenya and is regional landmark and offers unique hiking opportunity to Wagagai Peak; being the fourth highest mountain in East Africa. Your hike will take 3-4 days and move through the farmed areas up to park boundary. You will start the upward trek that passes you through the various zones.
Day 1: Entebbe to Mbale
Transfer from Entebbe/Kampala to Mbale town. Final purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables, before check in at the Hotel or similar for dinner and overnight at Mt Elgon Hotel. Meal Plan – Lunch and Dinner.
Day 2: Budadiri to Sasa River camp:
After an early breakfast, you will trek the fringes of Mt. Elgon through Gishu farms up to the ladder cliff entry point into the park where you will sight various monkeys and birdlife. The forest is dense and primary hiking here is rewarding and takes 7hours, arriving in the Sasa River camp for our overnight.
Day 3: Sasa River camp to Mude Camp:
This is the longest trek on the trip, taking 8 hours to the Mude River camp. You will trek through the bamboo forest, finally emerging to the Mude camp passing through the giant lobelia and groundsels forest, enjoying the ericaceous species. You will sight flowers that are endemic to the national park.
Day 4: Ascend to Wagagai:
This is the climax of the hike, and will see you through the moorlands where the beautiful everlasting flowers are moving along the river bunks. You will climb steeply up to the Wagagai peak (4321m).
Day 5: Descend to Budadiri:
After early coffee, you descend to the Budadiri for your onward safari or transfer back to Kampala/Entebbe. Meal Plan-Breakfast & Lunch.
