HIKING TIPS
- Collect and pack none-burnable items like tins, bottles, silver foils, plastics etc. Out of the park
- Respect others in the Hus by sharing space, stoves, talking quietly and using head phones for your radio.
- Maintain your daily pack of rainy gear, cameras, binoculars, guide books, first aid kits, and other personal essentials like sun lotion, lunch bites.
- The high altitude and wet cold weather conditions of the Rwenzoris can affect any traveler be it experienced or inexperienced.
- Hypothermia, Dehydration, Altitude sickness, AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) HAPE (high altitude cerebral Edema) are common to hikers. It is advisable to start moving to a lower altitude with some porters. Take a lot of fluids if affected.
- Ensure that you have warm sleeping bags, clothes and other equipment’s which can be hired locally at RMS offices
What to carry with you:
- Water bottle with at least enough water of 2 litres at any given time,
- Sun glasses/ sheds,
- Hand gloves and head gear for protection,
- Warm clothing and rain gear. It may rain any time in the mountain.
- Long studded safari boots with high ends and/or gumboots,
- Long sleeved-shirts with trousers tacked in boots. You need inner garments and t-shirts too!
- Guide books for plants, animals and birds may be useful,
- Tents and safari mattress with heavy sleeping bags are essential.
- Camera, binoculars may be useful. Ensure that they are covered in sleeping bag to function well.
- Light foods such as snacks, fortified biscuits, etc are good for you during hiking before meals.
- Cooks and porter services can be arranged locally by the Bunyonyi Ltd as requested.
- For hiking that is more than one day, you will need food, porter and cook services.
